With Sokcho's elevation to city status on 1963.1.1, Sokcho-ri 2-gu; when the dong system took effect on 1966.1.1, it became Dongmyeong-dong (東明洞, meaning brightened by the sun rising from the East Sea). The oldest neighborhood after Yeongnang-dong. The Dongmyeong Port breakwater was built over 15 years starting in 1978.
